----- Alaska Dall Sheep -----

The Alaska Dall Sheep, Scientific name: Ovis dalli, inhabit the rugged steep slopes and rocky crags of the Alaska mountains. High mountain meadows separated by rocky ridges above timberline are the Dall Sheep favorite feeding and resting areas. Dall Sheep males are call Rams, and the females are call Ewes. They are both white in color. Dall Sheep are exceptional in that their horns, which are not shed, grow unevenly over the coarse of the year resulting in a pattern of "rings" called Annuli. The age of  individual Dall Sheep can be determined by counting the Annuli, one for each year of age. Rams have large, heavy, curling horns with tapering ends, and Ewes have slender slightly curved horns. As the Dall Sheep Ram grows older to about 7 or 8 years of age, the horn grows to complete a full circle or "Full Curl" when viewed from the side.
At adult maturity Dall Sheep Rams attain a weight of about 300 pounds, and the Ewes attain a weight of about 150 pounds or about half the size of the Ram. Dall Sheep are Browsers that forage on a wide variety of mountain plants and shrubs for their food supply. They are usually found in small wondering groups known as a "Band" of Sheep. The movement of these Bands of Sheep is mainly caused by food supply and seasonal weather changes.
The breeding season or "Rut" occurs in late November or December, and the young called "Lambs", are born in late May or early June. The Lambs spend the summer with the Ewes and are weaned prior to the Fall Rut. The natural predators of Dall Sheep are Wolves, Bears and Eagles when the Lambs are newborn. Dall Sheep are an Alaska Big-game species that is difficult to hunt because of the rugged, steep mountainous terrain in which they live.
